Often thought of as the official farewell to summer, Labor Day can feel a bit bitter-sweet. But with kids being in school for weeks already and it being two months since our last holiday, I think this Labor Day will be welcomed by all.

And if you’re staying in town this holiday, there are plenty of events and activities to choose from for entertainment. From sports, art, music, food, books and comics – this is a great weekend to experience the variety our metro area offers.

Decatur Book Festival: As one of the biggest book fairs in the country, the Decatur Book Festival is something all locals should experience. The festival runs Friday, August 31st through Sunday, September 2nd, with special events scheduled throughout the weekend.

Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival: Held at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, this festival is perfect if you’re looking for a short weekend getaway. Events take place Friday, August 31st through Sunday, September 2nd.

Dragon Con: A four day event, Dragon Con will be held Friday, August 31st through Monday, September 3rd. The annual parade will start at 10 am on Saturday and is often a favorite for attendees – plus it’s free!

Taste of Soul: A great downtown festival that celebrates music, food and art. The event starts off with a 5k on Saturday, September 1st and the festival will continue on through Sunday evening.

Cirque Du Soleil Presents Corteo: While not a traditional Labor Day event, the Infinite Energy Center in Gwinnett will be hosting Cirque Du Soleil for 7 shows between Wednesday, August 29th and Sunday, September 2nd

Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game: Football season is back! And in this year’s kickoff game, the Washington Huskies will face the Auburn Tigers at 3:30 pm on Saturday, September 1st in the Mercedes-Benz stadium.

Art in the Park: If you’re looking for a more low-key event, Marietta’s Art in the Park will run from 10 am – 5 pm Saturday, September 1st through Monday, September 3rd.

Stone Mountain Labor Day Weekend: The park’s laser show will be followed by an extended firework display Saturday, September 1st through Monday, September 3rd.

Noshfest: Celebrate Jewish food and culture at the 8th annual Noshfest. The festival is held in Marietta on Sunday, September 2nd and Monday, September 3rd.

Big Peach Sizzler: And, we can’t forget about the traditional Labor Day 5k and 10k on Monday, September 3rd. The 5k starts at 7 am at the Brookhaven Marta Station and the 10k starts in Chamblee at 7:30 am.
